Olori Atuwatse III, Queen Consort of the Warri Kingdom, delivered a powerful speech at the SDGs Short Film Challenge, themed “Film as a Catalyst for Sustainable Development.” The event brought together development partners, policymakers, and filmmakers to discuss how storytelling impacts national and global development outcomes.
In her address, she highlighted the influence of film in translating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into accessible narratives that communities can understand and relate to. She pointed out that intentional storytelling clarifies complex development ideas and helps both urban and rural populations see their role in advancing the SDGs.
During the event, she received the Excellence in SDGs Implementation Award from Mr Mohammed Malick Fall, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, in recognition of her leadership and the work of the Royal Iwere Foundation and Elevate Africa. These organisations continue to promote programmes and storytelling efforts that strengthen families and create opportunities within and beyond the Warri Kingdom.
She also acknowledged key dignitaries whose efforts significantly contribute to national development, including Ms Cynthia Rowe, Development Director of FCDO; Ms Sharon Dimanche, Chief of Mission at IOM Nigeria; Her Excellency Mrs Edesili Okpevbolo Anani, Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady of Edo State; and Her Excellency Mrs Bamidele Abiodun, First Lady of Ogun State and the event organiser.
She commended the creativity and commitment of the filmmakers participating in the challenge, calling them vital partners in changing public perception and motivating action. She urged policymakers and development agencies to view film as a strategic tool for sustainable development, emphasising its role in enhancing public understanding and accelerating progress toward the SDGs.
The event highlighted the crucial role of the creative industries in driving national growth. Her Majesty advocates for increased collaboration among storytellers, government officials, and development partners, sharing a vision for Africa where narratives inspire transformation and empower communities with knowledge and confidence to shape their future.
